Xbox smb issue

Posted on Thursday 18 March 2010

  • hi,
i'm relatively new at this, so any help would be great.

i had my xbox set up through a wired network over the year, and it worked fine, in accessing the media files through xbmc over the workgroups (smb) format. i recently moved home, and have set it up over a wireless network. i have a bridge attached to the xbox, and can access the xbox fine over the ftp from the other computers on the network. i can't, however, access the computers from the xbox in order to play movies or what not through xbmc.
i have it set to dhcp configuration, and the
    ip is 192.168.1.101
    mask: 192.168.1.1

is there something i have to configure in xbmc? any help would be great. thanks alot.

  • alright here's an update on what's happening.

the xbox is connected to a wireless bridge.
i have 2 pc's on the network. one is connected wired to the router, and one is wireless.

the xbox can connect to the wired pc when i set the workgroup smb directory to go to that computer's ip (192.168.1.102). but when i set the workgroup smb directory to go to my laptop (wireless) @ 192.168.1.104, it can't connect to it. similarly, the laptop can't ftp the xbox, but the wired pc can. all connections are on the same network, so it must be a setting i have wrong. no firewall is up, guest account is on on all pcs. any ideas? it's driving me insane.

  • from what i can see in your post you have 2 problems: wireless access to the xbox, and smb problems.

    possible solutions for problem #1:
please check the quality of the link between the wireless computer and the wireless router. is the wireless computer able to see stream quicktime movies properly? can you copy files to the wired computer with no problems?

    possible solutons to problem #2:
what kind of os are you using? windows xp home / professional? have you recently upgraded to sp2? have you installed a new firewall? have you changed accounts etc? are you using simpe file sharing? hoew is the xbox connected to your home network?

for your smb problems please make sure that you do not have security restrictions to the shares and if you do (allow only certain accounts, etc) configure those in the appropiate section in the xboxmediacenter.xml file

my home setup, which has been working since last year, is something like this: 2 computers (one running windows xp professional sp2 - music / photo server), the other running mandriva linux le 2005 (movie server). both have been setup for workgroup computing and both a an account with the same username and password to make connectivity easier.

the xbox is connected wireless via a game adapter from netgear (the wireless router is also from netgear). this setup works perfectly and i'm able to ftp to and from the xbox not to mention stream any content.

make sure that your ftp program in the other computer is configured to connect properly to the xbox, i believe the xbox does not use a passive transfer ftp server but evox dahsboard does (or vice versa).

    hope this helps

  • your mask is wrong.

  • 1. wireless connections for both laptop and xbox are fine, since xbox can access the desktop pc (which is beside the router). the laptop is in a room beside the router, so the signal must be ok.

    2. the laptop (wireless) is using xp pro with sp2, and the desktop is using xp home. both have firewall off and guest accounts on.

    3. i believe i'm using simple file sharing (just right clicked and shared em). i can access the files fine between the two computers, not a problem there.

    4. xbox has a wireless bridge, which has picked up the desktop pc fine and also an internet signal (via the weather section of xbmc). when i set the workgroup smb path to smb://192.168.1.102 (desktop pc), it works fine, but when i do the laptop ip, it doesn't work.

    nothing's been able to work.
    thanks for the help.

  • what should it be??
and what should i put the server name as?

  • sorry i had mask as 255.255.255.0 and gateway as 192.168.1.1

  • silly question... do you have something shared on the laptop?

  • i also just noticed i can only access the xbox through ftp on one computer (the one that has a wire from the router to the comp. the one that's running on wireless has trouble connecting...sometimes it does, but very slowly, and this is on a 802.1g network)...
that's not really a big deal, i just want to be able to access the media files from the xbox.
