Strange network issues

Posted on Sunday 14 March 2010

  • hello all,

i am having a very strage issue with my xbox or my network.

the problem is this, i have 2 pc and my xbox hard wired to a router. inorder to access my pc in xbmc i go into workgroup smb and it shows the workgroup fine. the problem starts when i turn off my room-mates pc. if this (much older) pc is off the xbox can not access the network. i get an error that says "nt_object_status_not_found".

what makes it even odder is even with my room-mates pc off my pc can still ftp to the xbox. i am not sure if it is an issue with the xbox, my pc, or my router.

have any of you seen this error? is there a fix for it? and what is it?

    any suggestions would help.

    thanks.

  • i dont think it is anything to do with my room mates pc or the xbmc.xml. it works fine on other networks, just not mine. does anyone know of a service that might not be started that could cause this. i was advised that it might have to do with the guest account, but i set it up and had the same issues. i even made a useraccount for my xbox andf i still get nothing.

to make things worse my room mates pc has died causing my network to be down till i get this issue fixed.

    any ideas would help.

  • hey is anyone using server 2003 as their smb server? b/c im having probs getting into my 2k3 server from my xbox and i have guest enabled on the server and all to allow access but xbmc says permission denied. anyone who got thru this could be of some help.

  • it's a registry setting. but based on your post, i would not recommend you go around changing stuff in your registry. have you tried changing your bookmark path to use the computers ip address as i suggested before?

  • im not sure on how to do that?

  • ok then... here's the beginners version on how to modify your bookmarks.

    1) open up xboxmediacenter.xml file via ftp. it's located on your xbox in the same location as your xbmc xbe file
    2) find the "

  • the error shows up when your xbox cant find the smb share, maybe your roommate pc is errorly (dont know if this word even exists) accessed by xbox and not you pc.
so check the ips. i get this error when my server runs out of memory. then all shares are lost and i have to reboot.
maybe it also has something to do with different windows versions (w2k, xp). i heard of some net problems with this two versions in one network (guess you have to goggle about that).

  • it sounds like your roomates pc is acting as the master browser on your local network. *windows networking is mostly netbios broadcast based. *if you dont specify a server in your smb:// url, the xbox broadcasts out to look for whats in the workgroup. *the master browser responds to this request.

ftp is entirely different. *it's ip based. *this is why you can ftp from your pc to your xbox. *

you can force windows to bypass this by specifying the destination machine. *just put your computer's name or ip address in the smb:// url. *try the ip first, since it avoids having to use wins (windows name resolution).

    example:
    smb://workgroup;xbox:xbox@192.168.1.1/music/
i am sorry, i am new to this.. where would i put this string. is there somewhere on my pc or is it something i need to change on the xbox.

i thought it was maybe a setting on my pc, but i can not find anything. it works on every other network i put it on but mine.

some more detail would be helpfull.. thx
