Also, after trying to put the truck into reverse i let it idle for about 10 minutes while i was looking at the engine and then all of a sudden the truck started making a grinding noise and smoke started coming out of the engine. The next day I tried putting a whole bottle of transmission fluid into the engine and then it worked and i could drive it normally. Then the next day it wouldn't budge again. No visible leaks or anything. What's the problem?
I know this sounds like a lot,but it is necessary to get a true reading.
There will be hash marks on the stick to show where the full level is when hot. This is where the fluid level needs to be. If it low,add a PINT at a time, checking afterwards to see if it is full. A low fluid level will cause the vehicle to not move, and a little low will ruin the transmission by causing it to slip and overheat.
Put a clean piece of cardboard on the ground under the transmission after driving to help find leaks and drips.
