How do I stop 1stPage from making backups?

Posted on Saturday 4 July 2009

  • I think I've looked through all of the options, but I can't find it.

  • So is it OK for me to delete them? ATM I'm just making dummy practice files. The "real" file in each case looks fine. I can see that if I were working on existing files that I have on my site this back up would save doing a "Save as" whenever I felt unsure of changes I was making.

  • For me i have one sort of templated layout. One fo the first things my brit friend taught me was that a uniformed site is usually much preferred to one with a changign style every page and since I comment my content areas all i ever have to change really is text in one div. but that's just me

    No, that's not just you!
But there's sites where the content ( text, images and design changes ) are constantly
and frequently updated. Small changes, but indeed changes that needs to be made.
There can be 20 pages open at the same time, and when you're eyeballs starts rolling....
screwups are bound to happen

  • I agree with Stilts - I just have a bogus name that indicates what the coding / structure / content will be, and then the final project gets renames appropriately.

  • And why do you want that?
I think you mean the temporary file that's being created on the fly, right?
If this is it, you gotta have it to undo and redo changes that you make.
This is extremely necessary and you can't get rid of it.

  • oh ive done that many times too. ive had the same template for ages now but even changing the images and whatnot and header sizes is much easier. my method back fires on em all the time though cause half the time im too lazy to open template page. so ive made changes to my index then open page 1 copy text into my newly styled index and instead of save as.... well then it just sucks and its time for a break.

  • I've always just ignored them. No need to upload them though.
1stPage will create new ones whenever you make some changes.
    Deleting them is just unnecessary.
Don't work direct in your directory. Make a copy of your whole directory and work in that!
When you're happy with the pages you've been working on, copy them to their right location ( your original upload directory ). Also keep another copy of the original directory as a backup.
Here's a thread on how to preview
    http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2839
I don't know if those were useful to you, but they don't harm you either ;)

  • This si strange. I have never had a problem with the temp files. I always see it created in my directory when i open and change something on a particular page but as soon as I save the page and close it the temp file gets deleted on it's own. either that or it becomes invisible and I always work in my directory...

    hmmm
    :hellother

This is basic for me and has got nothing to do with temp files!
If you work direct in your directory and later find that you did screw it up, there can be
a real pain restoring it. I've just got the feeling that the threadstarter could find this one to be a helpful advice. This has saved me a lot of time over the years, sometimes I'll even
    keep backups of backups ;)

  • yeah i can understand that completely and all too regularly I usually have one final version of the file and then the one i work on I always save as something like myfile1.html until I am ready.

  • If you have a lot of pages to work with, renaming easily gets confusing.
If you only got one site with few pages it's easier,
but I still think you'll be better off working on a copy.
And all this is IMHO
